Guide to Doman Books

What is a Doman Book?

A Doman Book, also known as a “homemade book”, is basically a children’s book but with a few key differences.

Doman Books are a teaching aid: Doman Books are like children’s books, but they are also used to teach children how to read. Instead of being just a nice story to share with your kid, it’s made with the intent of teaching them how to read the book.
The print size is large: It is so important the print size is large! In order for the kids to read the book they have to be able to see it, so big, bold letters are the way to go!
Picture and text is separate: One page has text and then the following page is followed by a picture to describe the text. Doman Books are made this way so that images do not distract from the legible text. Many children’s books have small text on top of a beautiful picture, so children tend to focus on the image instead of the text.
Fun, Personal Topics: Doman Books are made at home so parents can make stories that are relevant to them. Kids love when they are part of the story! Also, Doman Books can be a great moment to teach your kid about a topic that is important to your family or the world.

How to use a Doman Book?

Doman Books are read just like children’s books but here’s a step-by-step guide to help you out.

Get comfortable with your kid: Have your kid sit on your lap or across from you and make sure you’re both comfortable.
Introduce your child to the topic: When both of you are comfortable, tell your kid about what they are about to learn and ask if they’re ready. If the Doman Book is about Christmas say “are you ready to learn about Christmas?”
Read the Doman Book: Start reading the book page by page and make sure your kid can easily see it. If you see something interesting point it out to your child. For instance, if the book is about New Year and there is a picture of fireworks say “look at all those amazing fireworks!”
End the session with enthusiasm: When the Doman Book is over, always end the session with an enthusiastic celebration. Reading is fun! Every parent has a different celebration so do what feels natural, whether it’s a hug, a fist bump, or a dance, if you’re having fun your kid will too.
