Teaching and Growing Together - My Experience as a Mom Doing the Doman Method with Four Kids

The most important thing I learned from those early days was to view the Doman programs as a gift to my children, cherishing every moment we spent together.
— Rosalind Doman

Hello! I’m Rosalind Doman, a mother of four wonderful children. They are all adults now and the founders of Doman Learning, but years ago, I had the privilege of teaching them using the Doman Method. Teaching my children not only allowed me to nurture their reading and math development from a very young age but also deepened our bond as a family. In honor of Mother's Day, I want to share the joys, challenges, and cherished moments from our journey using the Doman Method. Mother’s Day reminds us of the unique role we play in our children's lives, and I hope my story inspires other mothers in their journey of nurturing and teaching. Plus, don’t miss out on a little gift for you, the reader, at the end!

Early Days with the Doman Method: My First Child

When I first became a mother, I was determined to teach my children at home for as long as possible. My husband, Douglas, and I were able to make a schedule that insured I was still able to work and also have the time to be at home. With my eldest, Marlowe, I started with a newborn sensory program, which you can find in the book, How Smart is Your Baby. It was a joy to wake up each morning to work with him. By the age of three months, he was getting up on his hands and knees. He wasn’t special in the conventional sense—we simply provided him with ample opportunities to move and grow. The most important thing I learned from those early days was to view the Doman programs as a gift to my children, cherishing every moment we spent together.

Growing Family, Growing Fun: The Doman Method with Multiple Children

Spencer and Morgan

When I had my second son, Spencer, I found myself more relaxed. I had already prepared plenty of Doman materials, and the process became even more enjoyable, especially since I now had an additional coach—Marlowe! Older siblings can be wonderful helpers, and Marlowe was eager to show off his new skills to his little brother. This dynamic added a fun, show-and-tell element to our daily learning sessions.

Adapting to Individual Needs with the Doman Method

When my daughter Morgan came along, our family dynamics and needs shifted significantly. She displayed signs of learning difficulties early on, particularly with language and organization. This development taught me an important lesson: you cannot always divide your time equally among children, which is perfectly okay.

The child who needs you most will naturally receive more attention. I learned to manage my time and guilt by being meticulously organized, dedicating time each week to create new teaching materials by hand—long before Doman Learning released their digital Doman materials.

Reaping the Benefits of the Doman Method

When my fourth and last child, Noah, was born, I had a wealth of experience and materials at my disposal. Interestingly, Noah learned many things indirectly from his older siblings, like swimming across the pool with a front crawl at just two and a half years old—something my husband and I definitely did not teach him!

Many friends and family members have asked me if all this effort was worth it. My answer is always a resounding yes. Not only are all my children smart and capable, which has given them more options in life, but this program has also brought us closer to each other. Here’s my advice to parents considering a similar path: Make learning fun. If it's fun, your child will naturally want to engage and learn. The effort is worthwhile. One of my favorite memories is doing the infant language program. I’ll never forget communicating with my babies for the first time.

Insights and Reflections on Doing the Doman Program with Four Kids

Reflecting on these years, I feel an immense sense of pride and accomplishment. We’ve built not just a foundation for academic success, but a strong family bond that cherishes learning and togetherness. There was definitely hard parts of the program, like making new materials for each kid, but with Doman Learning, that problem is a thing of the past. If you’re considering a similar approach, remember that the joy of teaching your children comes not just from educational success but from the shared experiences that these moments bring.
